Another low-cost option (if you're considering a cheap Dell) is a
refurb.

You can get some nice deals there.

The main thing to watch out for is that the ones that come with WinXP
pre-installed (they have XP Pro) are SP1, and have no extra drivers.
Be prepared to download network card drivers from Dell's website to
your USB key so you can install them...

Note - not recommended for laptops, as they do NOT guarantee the
batteries...
