Driver/controller/drive incompatibility.
3Ware pretty much gives you piece-of-mind for $100, worth it.
You also have hot-plug and RAID-1 options (I highly recommend RAID-1).

Not good.  You're running your _entire_ SCSI bus at Single-Ended (SE)
40MBps speed, with _no_ Low Voltage Differential (LVD) 160MBps speed.
