It appears that you don't recommend the 7600GT (Fry's has them for $199
after a $50 rebate).  I'm looking to put a new PCIe video card in a AM2
4200+ system (Motherboard: ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe - uses 570SLI chipset -
didn't need dual 590SLI performance).

According to your blog - you're suggesting to find a NV42 6800GS - better
performance for +$30.  Is that still an accurate statement or is there an
even more recent 'around $200 video card'.
