Sounds like marketing to me.  What's more, if '54g' equipment can't 
renegotiate itself to lower levels as interference dictates, it's pretty 
useless.  Also, they indicate supposedly compatibility with 11g.

If your 11g stuff can do 54Mbps given the local operating conditions it 
will.
