I used a device called Kill-A-Watt, which you can now buy from ThinkGeek:

(it's dropped in price too, when I first got it, it was closer to $50, 
and wasn't on Think Geek)

Basically, its a device you plug in-line between the device/load and the 
outlet.  It then tells you all sorts of info from volts, to amps, to 
watts, power factor, AC frequency, etc.
