Remember when I had two (2) 40GB hard drives fail on my home
server? Both were 40GB Maxtor drives -- single 40GB platter,
low-profile (0.75") -- from retail boxes from Best Buy just
over 1 year old. And these were 5400rpm drives too.

Since most case ambients are easily approach 40C in many
cases, I hope there was cool air being blown on them.
How was it being cooled?

I don't think anyone has much issue with Seagate's newer
drives which have returned to 5 year warranties.

Now you know why I liberally use 3Ware for PATA.
On my new MicroATX/SATA setup, I'm using two (2) WD3200JD
drives for a reason. Not direct RAID-1, but I'm rsync'ing
changes every few days. I'm waiting for a new, affordable
PCIe RAID card.
Unfortunately, 3Ware hasn't introduced any. In fact, they
just introduced the PowerPC-based, PCI-X Escalade 9550. That
tells me their initial Escalade 9500S design, adding DRAM to
the existing ASIC+SRAM approach, was a bad move.

The WD3200SD (Caviar RE) isn't too much more than the JD
(Caviar SE), and worth it for servers/24x7 desktops.
