Just do _not_ get a SATA optical drive.  ;->
Most SATA controllers do ATA just fine.
But virtually _no_ SATA controllers handle ATAPI correctly.

The new SATA optical drives use a converter, and their
Windows drivers are typically hacked to only support 1
chipset (newer Intel ICH6+).
