Can you verify the port on the hub you're using functions with another 
machine?

Can you move her machine near the hub temporarily and connect it with a 
known good cable to see if the NIC in her machine is functioning?

I would install a proper CAT5 cable no matter what. Sounds like you're 
just inviting problems.
