I figured what the heck and just went ahead and bought the 6600GT.

I couldn't help myself.  I've never owned a card within the current generation 
in my life.  Actually with the 7800 or whatever, I'm very shortly going to be 
in the previous generation of cards.  But then, I'm usually two generations 
behind the current crop of cards, so it's still a step up.  I just hope the 
6600GT weathers as well as the Ti series has.  (But then if I later upgrade 
to PCIe it likely won't even matter. Sigh.)

Oh, apparently according to the description above, this card is DDR3.  I guess 
my  previous post was incorrect.  Perhaps they're all starting to ship with 
DDR3 now.
