Now that 2D/3D hardware APIs are abundant, yes, this can
occur.  The Windows Graphics Foundation (WGF) is designed to
handle this.

Of course, WGF 1.1 (essentially DirectX 9) is rather pathetic
in this regard, so the initial Vista will be a sluggish pig. 
WGF 2.0 (fka DirectX 10) is supposed to addres this far
better though.
