The I/O processor is a huge leap in the right direction.  My first real
computer, an Amiga A500, had an entire 3-or-4 chip chipset designed to
take the load off the CPU, something that the big-nobs still haven't
matched, some twenty years later.  As you've mentioned, if you've got
support chips, even low-performance ones, its amazing how much real
performance is left in your CPU when it isn't constantly doing IRQs and
other junk.
