Could've been lightning.  A long cable run is a lightning magnet.  You could 
try going fiber optic. ;)

But in all seriousness, I have no experience with cable runs.  Maybe someone 
else will have a suggestion if you don't want to deploy WiFi technology for 
wireless access.
